The practice
Light is not added to the work. It completes it.
Jon Sedore first tried stained glass in the early months of 2024 after seeing a class offered in his hometown of Trochu. About a dozen people sat together and worked through the repetitive parts of the process. Most of them found it monotonous. Jon found it attractive. He loved that the artwork changed with every step and that patience was part of the reward.
Jon’s grandmother has worked with stained glass for longer than he has been alive. He had no interest in it as a boy and she never taught him, but as an adult he found the same interest waiting in himself. She lives far away now and is no longer able to work regularly, but she remains one of the biggest fans of his art.
Jon can lose himself in a finished piece as the light changes it. A colour or highlight can appear that he had not noticed before. The Alberta Badlands shape that attention: layered geology, fractured formations, long horizons, living colour, and the awe of standing in front of something much larger than yourself.
The place
Made in the Alberta badlands.
Long horizons, coulees, river valleys, dry grass, winter clarity, and sudden weather all find their way into the studio vocabulary.
People may call the feeling God, Creator, the Universe, or simply nature. Jon calls it God’s grace. The name matters less than the awe itself—and the attempt to carry some of that feeling into glass.
